Unit 14 discusses the issue of course book usage in the classroom.
Course books are usually comprised of a set of different materials, from the traditional student’s book to multimedia content. They provide a tried and tested balanced syllabus that is usually graded to a level suitable for the students. Less experienced teachers can find many good teaching ideas for specific subjects in them, and more experienced teachers can more easily supplement them in order to cater for the needs of each class.
On the other hand, course books are written for a general public and will always be a compromise between using tested material versus using material created specifically for the class. It is easy to overuse a course book and make lessons predictable and boring for students, while teachers stop being creative and searching for fun and interesting activities for the class.
To supplement course books, teachers can use two kinds of materials:
Authentic materials: any material that a native speaker normally comes in contact with in their daily
life - newspapers, magazines, programs, adds, menus, films, recorded radio. Because
of their authenticity these materials are usually very appealing to the students.
However, since they are not originally designed for teaching English, they should be
carefully selected in accordance with the level of the students.
Created materials: usually designed by the teacher they can be graded to the level of the students and
designed according to the intended time to use them and the availability of other resources.
Unit 14 provides several ready-to-use pre-created materials such as crosswords, word search, flash cards, picture stories and role-play cards.
