Unit 8 introduces the future tense system. The future system is one of the most complex areas of the English language because there are many tenses and ideas that can be used to express future meanings.
Unit 8 presents in detail the seven most common future structures:
1. The future simple
2. The future continuous
3. The future perfect
4. The future perfect continuous
5. Be going + infinitive
6. The present simple
7. The present continuous.
Notice that the two last structures on the list are actually present tenses which, nonetheless, can be used to express future ideas.
The list is not in order frequency. In fact, forms ‘Be going + infinitive’ and ‘Present continuous’ are the most frequently used. They are also very similar, so special attention should be given to clearly state the main difference between the two: the ‘Be going’ structure is always followed by a verb.
The ‘Future simple’ is also commonly mistaken with the ‘Be going’ form, and for that reason, Unit 8 recommends to teach these two tenses together to more easily show their differences.
Unit 8 provides a few examples for each of the seven future tenses along with complete details about their form, common usages, and teaching ideas. As usual, this makes Unit 8 a quick and practical reference document for future tenses that can be used in a classroom context.
