Unit 7 presents several techniques to teach new language. Students need to be exposed to new language, understand its meaning, understand how it is constructed and they must be given as many opportunities to practise it as possible.
To ensure that students are introduced to new language in a balanced and productive way most lessons will be focused on just one of three areas: vocabulary, grammatical structures and language functions.
Naturally, given the many factors that influence how easy or difficult it is for students to apprehend new language, an effective teacher will be able to come up with an appropriate lesson structure for each class and subject that will be introduced. Notwithstanding, ESA methods can be applied with great effectiveness to lessons that are focused in one of the three aforementioned areas:
Vocabulary: ‘Straight Arrow’ ESA approach; E => S => A
Grammar: ‘Patchwork’ ESA approach; E => A => S => A => S => A
Functions: ‘Boomerang’ ESA approach; E => A => S => A
Unit 7 recommends specific techniques for each of these three class structures and provides detailed examples of typical lessons for each area.
