The unit examined common situational problems teachers may encounter in the classroom and ways to combat them. It was important for me to note that during first lessons, establishing rapport is an ideal way to set the tone for the rest of the course and the time to be spent with students. With new groups it is essential to get to know them - their goals with good the language and their needs or challenges, any future plans or interests they may have and their language level. Classmates also get an opportunity to learn from and about each other and this makes things a bit easier if and/or when they move as an existing group.
It was noted that warmers are good way to ease students into the day’s lesson and should be fun, short and engaging. Students who are reluctant to participate in any aspect of the lesson should not be forced to do so as this will result in lack of motivation and unnecessary pressure. Should this be a common challenge faced in the classroom or during the learning experience, students are to be encouraged to do group or pair work which is hoped to increase a desire to more willingly participate.
