Teaching correct pronunciation of separate words can be challenging indeed not only because of its complexity. It's variety of English accents that sometimes seems off-putting. A good example is a well-known video about two Scotsmen in a lift trying to get the pronunciation of 'eleven' right. When the teacher does find time to teach some basic rules of phonology, the next exercise in the course book will prove that useless by featuring a dozen or so exception to the rules just taught. I normally put up with students having their own way of saying words as long as it does not inhibit general understanding especially at initial stages of language learning.
