This section introduced the concepts of receptive and productive skills: Reading and listening, and writing and speaking respectively. It discussed the importance of having pre-existing knowledge of the context in which language is used in order to properly understand it. As an example it used the newspaper headline “Cowboys Destroy Bears” to show that some knowledge of how American sports teams are named and written about matters more in understanding the sentence than does a knowledge of the vocabulary and grammar.
