Receptive skills are the consumption side of language. Reading and listening are how people take in information to do something with it later. These skills are not simply to learn “A” to produce “B”, but to be given “A” and understand it as “A, B, or C” and then to produce a myriad of things later. The ability of understanding one item in many ways is due to how people take in information; this could be predictive reading, scanning news shows, skimming back of books, detailed listening of instruction, or using context to gain meaning of a sentence. All these abilities are important to a student learning English as each is used on a constant basis in fluent English. Therefore, each of these abilities should be explored in the lessons. Each lesson should feature interesting topics, different presentation of language, and different requirements of the students. By doing this, the students will need to use all their receptive skills to complete the tasks. Over time students will be more comfortable consuming English, understand it, and will be ready to act with it.
