I am gaining a much better understanding of the engage phase than I had previously. (I actually commented on one of the chapters that I was confused about how students could participate to any degree without having been exposed to the lesson.) However, I now realize that the purpose is actually to generate interest through engagement as the teacher seeks to motivate students toward achieving his/her learning objective.
