This unit dealt with teaching receptive skills, which are skills that are either read or heard. Written language is often easier for students to learn because the words are captured on paper. Listening to language can be harder for students because nothing is captured in print, making it more difficult to decipher. Receptive skills are either done for pleasure or for a purpose, and these motivations can vary how we read or listen. There are several specialist skills used for reading and listening, including scanning, skimming, predicting, deducing from context and to gather detailed information. To teach receptive skills, students should be interested in the topic at hand or the teacher should be able to generate interest amongst the students.
