Unit 11 teaches us the importance of Teaching Receptive Skills which are reading and listening. When teaching receptive skills it is important to explain the difference between 'for a purpose' and 'for entertainment,' even though the two can coincide a lot of the time as well. We learned how our minds will recognize and understand the words we read/listen and how our minds grasp the overall meaning based on pre-existing knowledge of the world. The students' understanding of different concepts will depend on their abilities in these areas: predictive skills, scanning, skimming, detailed information and deduction from context. Reading and listening become separate while teaching because while reading the student is able to read information over and over again, while listening the student is only able to hear the information once. It is very important the students become more confident in their ability to understand texts without knowing every single word. Careful selection of texts is vital for students to become more confident in their skills. Teachers must also be sure to choose interesting topics, create interest in those topics, and choose comprehensive tasks that promote understanding.
