Placement tests are given at the start of a course to determine the students level of English, so they can be placed in the appropriate class and/or so teachers can prepare material at an appropriate level. Diagnostic tests can also be given at the start of the course and are generally more extensive than placement tests. Progress tests are a good opportunity for teachers to assess a student's progress throughout the course on specific language areas. Practice tests are generally given before external exams. It is important for teachers to be givig on-going constructive support and feedback and this can be done one to one, or in small groups, or if common errors are detected - with the whole class. Tutorials are a good opportunity to provide more specific scaffolding for those students who need it. Student course evaluation is a great way for teachers to get feedback on how students feel about their learning, whether they think they are being adequately challenged and if there is a good balance of grammar, vocabulary, reading, writing, speaking activities. It is also a positive way to promote student engagement and helps them to have ownership over their learning.
