Schoepke, Wisconsin TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
In this unit we learn Modals, phrasal verbs and passive voice. These items will be very difficult to teach to foreigners. Its mostly because the sentence structure appear to be incorrect English. For example " He didn't turn up". This phrase of course means he did not show up. But to a foreigner it needs a second subject. Example being He did not turn up to the party. Even this sentence would be confusing because it is a English phrase. In the passive voice subject we learn how to shift the importance of a subject. This provides emphasis to a particular subject in the sentence. Almost the same as intonation.
