This unit highlighted just how tricky future tenses can be. Though the future tense has the four main forms like past and present tense (simple, perfect, continuous, perfect continuous), future tense has an additional 3 forms: be going, present simple, and present continuous, with the latter two indicating at a future date. In learning about these seven forms, it helped me understand how this could be confusing to teach students, as well as how to identify common mistakes and how to right them. It certainly reminded me just how difficult the English language can be. What I found most interesting was how the present simple and present continuous tenses applied to the future tense when a future date is indicated, such as the sentence, “The train leaves tomorrow” for present simple, and “I am leaving next week” for present continuous. This lesson stressed how mistakes and errors are quite common when it comes to the future tenses because of how complex it is, and I would need to pay extra attention to how I would teach the future tenses so as to avoid confusion.
