Rose, Wisconsin TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
This unit dealt with modals, passive voice and phrasal verbs. These concepts in English are more advanced and should be taught carefully since they can be difficult for non-native speakers to understand. One good way of slowly introducing them is by using them in uncontrolled conversation so that students get used to hearing these concepts used naturally. Modals are verbs used before other verbs to add meaning to the main verb. The modal verbs are: can, could, should, will, might, ought to, have to, have got to, must, would, shall, may, need to and needn't. Passive voice is used when the focus of a sentence is on the object and not the agent of the action. Relative clauses were also touched upon in this unit, and are clauses which gives further information about/modifies a noun. Relative clauses are introduced by a pronoun such as where, which, that, who, whom, or whose. Finally, phrasal verbs were discussed. Phrasal verbs operate as one item but consist of a verb plus one or two particles.
