This units focuses on some trouble we may face in our classroom.
First, how to give the first class. Usually the first lesson should be used to get familiar with students -- establish rapport with them and know about each student's English level -- so that we can make a suitable teaching plan.
Second, students may want to use their mother tongue in class. I think a useful method is to pretend that you can't understand it, which means you don't respond until students try to express them in English. However, we can't really ban the use of L1. I think if we push students too hard, even beyond their ability, students may feel frustrated. So teachers should clarify their requirements and language points in simple words in the first place.
Third, sometimes, students in the same classroom may have different levels. A basic rule is that you still pay equal attention to them and give them equal chances to speak and participate. If possible, we should prepare some extra activities or exercises for those excellent ones. We should follow the pace of the majority of students.
Last, for listening skills, we should still try to train students this skill even it's difficult for them, because it's essential for daily life. As teachers, we can pre-teach students the words they may need when understanding the audio clip.
I think this unit can't cover all the problems we may face in our teaching career, but one important point to bear in mind is to love the students and be patient.
