The receptive skills of reading and listening are as important as the productive skills of writing and speaking and where possible, we should give students opportunities to develop these skills in integrated lessons. We read and listen for a variety of purposes such as; learning about the near extinction of Bison in America, or; wanting to know what is happening in a sports game. We also read and listen for pleasure. Knowing the students is key to providing listening and reading materials and tasks that will interest and motivate them. If students are unfamiliar with the content and contexts, then they will find it harder to relate to and activate prior knowledge that would otherwise help them comprehend what they are reading or listening to. Reading and listening require specialist skills: scanning, skimming, predicting, deducing or acquiring detailed information. With careful selection of texts and pre-teaching any difficult or unknown vocabulary, students can be encouraged to activate skills in the engage and study phases.
