The first unit of the course describes the characteristics of both successful instructors, and successful learners. In brief, a successful teacher should be kind and able to understand and properly address students' difficulties, as well as able to effectively manage the classroom environment and monitor the progress of all students. Teachers must evaluate students' language use and provide prompt, helpful feedback without discouraging the students' desire to experiment and take initiative with the language. The teacher should inspire and motivate each student individually. The ideal student will in turn be passionate about the language, willing to ask questions, and in-tune with their own unique style of learning. A student's age and experience as well as his or her cultural and linguistic background are all individualizing factors which the teacher should account for in his or her approach to classroom instruction and personal guidance.
