This unit was about teaching pronunciation, something I find extremely difficult to do with my students. My third-grade students have a speech contest each year and I coach the students. Pronunciation is very, very hard. My students are Japanese and there are many sounds in English that simply do not exist in Japanese. I had not realised before doing this unit, the extent to which English is not phonetic. I found trying to read sentences with the phonetic alphabet and trying to translate words into the phonetic alphabet very difficult. I think it was a helpful exercise for me as it made me better understand my student’s difficulties.
