Oconto Falls, Wisconsin TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
In this unit, we focused on the different parts of speech, which I understand was merely scratching the surface when approaching this particular subject. Familiar terms such as nouns, verbs, adverbs, and adjectives were mentioned, as well as a crash-course to their somewhat more in-depth and specific subgroups, including abstract nouns, superlatives, indefinite articles, transitive verbs, infinitives, auxiliary verbs, and etc.
Unfamiliar terms were also mentioned, such as "gerunds" (when a verb ending in -ing takes on the form of the sentence's subject or object). It is always refreshing to place names to interesting situations you often found yourself wondering about in the past.
After completing this unit, I was reminded that, although there are many rules and rule-breakers to memorize and take note of, for the most part, it is all common sense. The reasoning behind why certain parts of speech are used or are not used in certain situations clicked in my mind after reminding myself that subconsciously, I was aware of all the answers because I practiced it everyday. We all reach a point where we know which words or tenses should and shouldn't be used, but what this unit did for me was help my understanding as to "why." Even if there is still much to cover, Unit 2 paved an intensive and yet realistic road for those needing to brush up on their English, even if it is their native language.
With all of this information introduced at once, the most helpful portion of this unit, to me personally, were the task sheets at the chapter's end. Knowing all of these terms and proper usages is pointless if you can't explain them to yourself or write them down in your own words.
