New Haven, Wisconsin TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
This unit focused on how to effectively teach vocabulary, grammar and functions using three different ESA approaches: straight arrow, boomerang, and patchwork. I personally prefer the patchwork approach because it zeroes-in on the correct knowledge and usage of specific vocabulary and grammar structures through different activation and study exercises. As such, I definitely appreciated the suggested activities for each stage of the lesson plan.
I would like to comment that although it is not necessary to discuss the origins and relevance of vocabulary, grammar and functions in every class, I do think it would be both helpful and interesting, especially for older and higher-level students. As it is considerably more difficult for the former to achieve fluency in another language, doing so would aid them in developing "survival English" and sounding more natural and comfortable when they speak. For the latter, it would simply advance their skills in English and increase their fluency. Additionally, I think it would be a good practice for natives. Doing so would not only develop our knowledge of our mother tongue, but also allow us to use it with more accuracy, precision and depth.
