Marengo, Wisconsin TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
This unit takes a quick look to the importance of teaching meaningful new vocabulary, along with correct grammar and other relevant language functions. I find it particularly interesting the how the lesson aims for a balanced way to teach these different parts of language making sure they are integrated among each other and making sure it is not boring and isolated knowledge.
Combining the teaching of new vocabulary, while introducing new grammatical structures for the use of it and applying it in different situations might sound challenging but once you have clear what the vocabulary to be taught is and how is most often used, adding grammatical structures to the lesson could be easier than expected. For example, we aim to teach vocabulary related to food. We add the language function where this vocabulary is most often used and in doing this we come up with how this new vocabulary could be used in a scenario where past tense is being taught. So students will first discuss with a partner what their favorite meals are. Then they are presented with a worksheet where they need to fill in blanks in sentences relating them to pictures provided. Finally we ask students to role play how they tell a friend about that one time they were ordering food at a restaurant and their food got mixed up. Since they are retelling a story, they'll need to use and apply their knowledge of past tense.
Finding activities that provide the student with the necessary new vocabulary, while addressing the usage of different grammatical structures and meaningful usage of said new vocabulary, can sound a bit ambitious in the beginning but very rewarding as a teacher if implemented. In my opinion, this is the key to this unit.
