Use of course books is a contentious issue for teachers, schools and language institutes. Course books provide several advantages including that they are often include tried and tested coursework and supplementary materials. They are often an expectation for the students and bring confidence, consistency and progression to learning. They provide practice of previously introduced language skills and conventions and a balance of vocabulary, skill and grammar practice. However they do not always fit with the needs of the students or motivate them to engage with the lesson and they can be expensive. The language can be challenging for some students and teachers often do not get a choice about whether or not to use course books. Differences in grammar and spelling conventions between British and American English can cause confusion.
If teachers and students are provided with course books then a sensible approach is for the teacher cto look at the content of each lesson carefully and decide if it is appropriate, meets the needs and level of the students, if it is relevant/relatable; and whether authentic/creative materials can be used to either introduce the content, or allow for more practice at the specific level of the students. Teacher manuals provided with course books can provide many different options and ideas to supplement course work and therefore can be helpful for teachers who are less creative and tend to rely on authentic materials only.
