Unit 4 covers the four types of present tenses in the English language: Present Simple, Present Continuous, Present Perfect, and Present Perfect Continuous. Although they are considered separate, there are some exceptions to their rules that allow some verb tenses to overlap or do not follow the typical structures of these tenses. For example, the verb "think" can have more than one meaning just by changing the tense: "thinks" could mean and opinion, while "thinking" could mean to consider. Other verbs such as "like" or "appear" also do not follow typical grammatical rules when it comes to present tenses, and they often do not change forms. What I learned in this unit is that because these four types of present tenses can become tricky, there are certain common errors that learners are prone to make that ESL teachers must listen for and correct. Certain words such as "since" and "for" may seem interchangeable to a non-native speaker, but there are small nuances that a native speaker understands and must be able to explain to students. It was interesting to see some of these nuances written out as rules, because often I don't think about why we say certain words rather than others as a native speaker. Studying this lesson helped me better understand the differences between the four present tenses and how meaning and implication changes based on what tense is used. I also feel more comfortable identifying the present tenses after reading through this lesson.
