The first point of grammar we encounter in unit 18 is modal auxiliary verbs. Modal auxiliary verbs are verbs used to express obligation, possibility, permission, ability, or advice. Modals don't change form according to person, and are followed by verbs in their base form. The second grammatical concept in this unit is the passive voice. In a passive sentence, the object of an active verb becomes the subject of the passive verb. For example, the active sentence 'They saw the dog' might be rendered in the passive voice as 'The dog was seen.' The passive voice is often used when the performer of an action is unknown, or unimportant. The final point of grammar in this section is phrasal verbs, or verb constructions containing multiple words such as take off, turn up, take on, etc. There are three types of phrasal verbs, distinguished by the placement of the object phrase or pronoun in relation to the particle.
