This unit highlighted the importance of evaluation and testing in the classroom, along with the various testing methods used to assess students at different levels of learning. Evaluation and testing are essential to students knowing their level of progress and helps teachers understand areas of strengths and weaknesses as the course progresses. While giving overt feedback goes a long way, formal feedback is also necessary and this can be done in one of three ways: through tutorials, evaluation by students and tests.
Tests are the most common form of formal feedback and most are given at different stages of a course. There are varying categories for test such as: placement tests, progress tests, diagnostic tests, practice tests and general external examinations.
Placements tests are designed to slow teachers to place students in the correct stream based on their language ability and progress tests are used periodically to analayse what language students have retained, acquired and forgotten over a period of time. Diagnostic tests are similar to placement tests but more extensive for while they are given at the start of a course to see what the students know, they also help teachers plan lessons and materials that will aid the difficulties and shortcomings of students which are revealed by their test results. Practice tests usually take the form and structure of the external exams for which the students are preparing for so students can get a feel of what the test conditions are like and how they match up to the required standards of the test.
