This unit covers the different types of language learning; language functions, grammatical structures, and vocabulary. When talking about the language functions, it is important to know what kinds of goals this section should achieve. For example, to effectively communicate, students should learn English in order to achieve the functions of inviting, refusing, agreeing/disagreeing, suggesting and whether or not they are communicating in formal, informal, tentative or technical language. This section also provides some criteria that need to be considered for each of the language functions such as meaning, use, appropriacy, etc. For vocabulary, points out which kinds of words are best to teach. Each of the language functions are accompanied by lesson plan suggestions with different options for the study, engage and activate stages.
