Johnson, Wisconsin TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
This unit was about common problems and techniques to deal with these. One of the problems discussed that I do run into is use of the native language in class. As I teach in a Japanese high school the vast majority of my students are native Japanese speakers and the few that are not are still much stronger in Japanese than in English. I do believe there is a place for Japanese in the classroom, especially to enable students to check their understanding. However, it can be easily be overused and become a kind of crutch. I agree strongly with one of the ideas of combatting this – only reply in English so they get used to using English. As my own Japanese improves this is something I try very hard to be conscious of – in the beginning it was not a problem as I simply didn’t understand anything they said in Japanese! I also work with Japanese English Teachers and I try to let the students see us chatting about simple ordinary things in English. I think this encourages the students as they see that they too can communicate in English with a native speaker which can be intimidating for at first.
