The teaching of phonology and pronunciation can be one of the most neglected areas of the teaching/learning process, even though it is a crucial part of the learning process.
Phonology will concentrate on the stress, intonation and rhythm of words within a sentence. Stress will determine the emphasis of the sentence, while intonation will help determine the message the sentence carries (agreeing, disagreeing, questioning, confirming or expressing some kind of emotion).
In order to teach Pronunciation correctly, a useful tool will be the Phonemic Alphabet, a group of characters that have been assigned a particular sound. These sounds will be produced in different parts of the mouth using sometimes the lips and/or the vocal cords. Pronunciation will look at how this sounds are produce, this is known as Articulation. Articulation divides the production of sounds in two categories: how sounds are produced (manner of articulation) and where physically are sounds produced (place of articulation).
