This unit covered the topic of course books and materials. Lesson materials can be authentic or created. Authentic materials are real-life materials intended for use by native speakers, such as magazine articles, songs, videos, etc.. These materials can be used to help generate interest and build confidence of students. Created materials are materials designed specifically for teaching students, and can include crossword puzzles, flashcards, word searches, etc.. In addition, most schools and teachers use course books. Course books have several advantages, such as using tried and tested lessons, providing balanced lessons, providing a syllabus, and building upon and practicing previously taught material. However, course books can make teachers lazy and less creative, may be outdated and uninteresting to students, and are usually targeted to a general audience instead of a specific group of students. A good teacher will strike a balance between using a course book and using both authentic and created materials to keep students interested and motivated.
