The past tense in the English Grammar is an aspect that focuses on past actions. The structure of the past tense is not quite different from the present tense only that actions are related to the past.
It is divided into:
Past Simple, Past Continuous, Past Perfect and Past Perfect Continuous.
Past Simple: This is in relation to action completed at a definite time. i.e it specifies when. the action was completed e.g Tunde proposed to Sade last night.
Past Continuous: It is used in expressing past actions that are in Continuous tense , actions beginning before a specified time and which still Continue after it and a gradual development that occurred in the past e.g He met Tunde at the beginning of the program .
They were getting more addicted to alcohol.
Past Perfect: It indicates the activities that has already been completed i.e A past action.
e.g Mercy came late to the party, She hadn't realized it would be over by 10pm.
Past Perfect Continuous: This lay emphasis on longer action in the past which has been in continuation in the past moment we are thinking about it. e g The lecturer had been lecturing the student before our arrival.
Note: Past tense should be well studied as to know when an action is in the Past Simple, Perfect, and Past Continuous form.
