During first lessons it is important for the teacher to establish rapport with the students and set the tone for the rest of the course, and help the students establish rapport with each other if they are a new group. Use the first lesson to understand students’ interests, needs/aspirations to tailor the course appropriately, and find out the English level of each individual class member.
To handle different levels consider using different materials or different tasks, or pair weaker and strong students together.
With especially large classes utilize worksheets, pair/group work, ensure clarity of instruction, and use choral repetition.
Resist using the students’ native language because they need to get used to expressing their thoughts and ideas in English.
