This unit covered the differences between teaching different groups of people. This unit covered the different types of beginner learners and what the common issues and important things to note when teaching them are. The unit also pointed out how motivation levels and behavioral problems can often differ when teaching beginners of different ages. It is also very interesting to note that the teacher should always speak in English even when he/she knows the native language even if it is okay for the students to occasionally explain material to each other using their native languages. It was also interesting to read the strengths and weaknesses of monolingual and multilingual classes such as English being the only common language for those in a multilingual class, so the students are really forced to use more English and cannot converse with each other using a different common language. For monolingual classes, the students might all tend to make similar mistakes in English based on differences with their own native tongue. I thought the sections on teaching business English and teaching young children were very helpful as well because they talked about the expectations and issues when teaching each of those groups, such as how business clients will often be tired for lessons and levels of the students in the class can differ greatly, and how children need to change activities often and need lots of praise and validation of their English skills. This unit also covered teaching students one-on-one as well as in a class setting, both of which have pros and cons.
