By reading this chapter I learned more about how to teach a new language and how one must teach vocabulary and grammatical structures. More than anything, reading this chapter made me think about how important it is to teach relevant vocab. Currently, I am working as an ALT teaching elementary school and middle school students and one of the frustrating things I have encountered is textbooks that want students to learn irrelevant vocabulary. For example, there is no need for students to learn how to say something like "yellow ochre" when they could instead be learning how to say "brown" or "gray." As teachers, it is necessary to think about what students will really benefit from learning.
