Glenmore, Wisconsin TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
In this unit 14 we cover the use of materials and resources. Textbooks, workbooks and teachers guides, as well as CDs, DVDs, videos. A comparison of the pros and cons of using authentic materials such as newspapers, menus, poems, brochures and magazines, vs the pre-created materials. Created materials include crossword puzzles, gap-fill exercises, word searches, picture stories and role-play cards. Both forms of materials are very helpful in different stages during the course of teaching and should be used in a balanced way. The textbook can also offer both a great guideline to follow but can also be boring and out of date so as a teacher it is good to be using it with judgement. There are four options on how to use a textbook. One is Omitting some material, replacing it with maybe newer material or more interesting material more geared to the class interest. Another is to Supplement the textbook/workbook materials with other exercises and ideas. Lastly Adapting the material to again be more in tune with the current times, or with what the students or class goals are. Knowing there are options and ways of working around a generally good textbook is quite freeing and allows the teacher to be more creative and peek the students interest to engage them and make the lessons feel authentic and useful.
