Like with teaching any sort of tense to non-English speakers, the terminology is the primary issue that needs to be dealt with. Explaining when and how you need to use these words is at times not nearly as difficult as using the terminology to help non-native speakers understand. Even as a native English speaker, using the different tenses naturally is much easier to explain to others than explaining the meaning of terms such as; past perfect or past continuous and then having to explain how to use and apply those terms to speaking or writing. Grammar terms are complicated.
