Frog Creek, Wisconsin TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
This is probably my most anticipated unit- learning how to teach new language.
There were three main points to talk about, what should be covered in their lesson, teaching techniques, and a simple run-through of how a class might be run when introducing new content.
For example, the first major point to cover would probably be vocabulary. 1/3 of this unit talked about the importance of vocabulary-list decisions and how to effectively seal them in students minds. Guidelines where given, with reminders that you want to choose words that fall under the following categories:
1. Finding vocabulary that is appropriate to the students current situation (i.e. job, living conditions, hobbies, social circle...etc)- this means that at the beginning of the semester, you need to take the time to know your class. Not in a prying way, but in a way that also shows that you do care about your students as individuals and their learning experience.
2. Relevant to a task- maybe giving them a list of vocabulary words and a task to complete. Maybe this is a task that they do often, like cleaning around the house, sweeping, wiping the countertops, etc.
3. Frequency and coverage- as the document mentioned, you want to find words that they can use often in realistic scenarios
4. Teachable to the appropriate learning level- obviously picking words that are not too simple for a more advanced class and visa-versa
This is just a small part of what the unit covered, but an important one. You never want to simply get the information out there; you should always keep your students in mind and strategize for the sake of their learning experience.
