I was put at ease by the knowledge that it is not expected to know all grammar by heart and I understand that to preserve my students’ respect and confidence in my skills, I need to be able to have a good foundation of understanding grammar. Being able to identify the parts of speech in a sentence allows for a greater understanding of a sentence’s meaning. It is imperative for the teacher to know that some parts of speech also has different types included i.e. nouns: common nouns, proper nouns, compound nouns, abstract nouns, and collective nouns; and verbs: transitive verbs, intransitive verbs, auxiliary verbs and infinitives. Nouns name people, places, things, animals, states, and qualities. Adjectives are used to describe nouns and are used to compare things either in a comparative or superlative form. There are two types of articles: definite (referring to someone/something specific) and indefinite (referring to someone/something unspecific and only singular nouns). Verbs denote an action/actions and states. It has four principal forms: base, past simple, past participle, and present participle. Adverbs offer more information or meaning to an action and consist out of five main types: manner, place, time, degree, and frequency. Gerunds are the –ing form of a verb, but it’s used as a noun (functioning as either a subject, object, or as the object of a preposition in a sentence). Pronouns replaces more precise nouns or noun phrases. There are four types: personal, possessive, reflexive, and relative. Prepositions indicate the relationships between a noun/pronoun and another word in the sentence. There are three categories: time/date, movement, and place/position. Conjunctions are used to join words of the same class (i.e. pairs of nouns/adjectives/adverbs/verbs/phrases) or to join clauses of sentences. Although parts of speech might seem daunting to the teacher and student, once some understanding is gained about the functions of these parts it helps with explaining and consequently comprehending the language better. I learnt some finer nuances of different parts of speech that I would have used automatically, but not have been able to describe to the students. Having this compact description of each part of speech on hand definitely organised my thoughts and helped me grasp concepts easier.
