Modals add extra meaning and nuance to a verb. These are used to express things like absolute need, ability, and advice. Many modals can modify the meaning of a verb in different ways, such as the modal must can show obligation, prohibition, and very certain assumptions. English uses passive voice as a stylistic choice to either hide who does an action or it is unimportant who does the action. Furthermore, passive can be used to mark who does an action with a by phrase. Relative clauses are word group that contains a subject and verb that modifies a noun. The clauses cannot be a sentence itself for they are dependent clauses. These clauses are used to add either necessary or unnecessary information to sentence. Defining relative clauses add necessary information and is needed for a sentence to carry the true meaning of what a speaker intends; it is not enclosed by commas. Non-defining clauses add unnecessary, but helpful, information and can be removed from a sentence if desired.
