Grammar is always a difficult subject to understand as an English speaker, let alone teach to non-English speakers. Past tense is one of the easier things to explain, because the majority of times a person will use only simple past tense, by adding -ed to a word. It is definitely clear though that at high levels of learning, finding creative ways to explain the more complicated ideas of past tense will be pivotal in getting students to understand the concepts.
