This has been a fascinating unit and has opened my eyes to how difficult learning pronunciation and phonology in English may be for some students. I think the key to learning Pronunciation and phonology is to keep it systematic, lively and incorporate it into lessons as much as possible. When learning the new sounds (phonemes) and the corresponding letters/letter groups I would use simple picture prompts then they would learn these new sounds by blending together while reading lively stories featuring words they have just learned. learning to write the letters/letter groups (graphemes) representing the new sounds, they would learn to write the sounds and link them to the graphemes, letting them write simple sentences and compose stories based on picture prompts will keep it exiting. In the unit there was a great example of the use of intonations in the football results on the BBC news. You could also incorporate watching football results on a tv or tape recorder and set the task for student to listen, communicate, copy and discuss the uses off fall and rise in intonation patterns. This would be a fun way of playing with uses of intonation.
