When teaching a new language, students will need to learn vocabulary, grammar, and language functions. These three broad areas can be broken down into more manageable items; such as vocabulary meaning, vocabulary usage, and grammar patterns. By breaking down into smaller sections lesson plans can be developed to allow students to get a better sense of what is being taught. For example, to teach the vocab of sports, the class could begin with an engage phase talking about their favorite sports; followed by a study phase of reading example articles on different sports; finally, the activate phase will see the students partnering up to make a new sport and rule book. Keeping lesson patterns varied to reinforce the area of language that is being taught will help students grow.
