This unit explained that modal auxiliary verbs ca be used to explain varying degrees of formality in situations as well as obligation and ability. For example, "may I" is used in the same sort of sentence as "can I", however, "may I" has a higher level of formality so while they may be used interchangeably in a sentence, it is important to understand that they should be used in different situations depending on the level of formality.
