Unit 12 covers the the four essential skills that are used when learning a language. They are divided into two groups the productive skills and the receptive skills. Productive skills are speaking and writing, while receptive skills are listening and reading. The unit lesson shows how to teach these skills following the ESA pattern. It's important to know how to teach the different skills and how each step is progressed for full comprehension or performance of the student. The format is so logical. Weather using the Straight Arrow ESA or the Patchwork ESA it will start with the Engage. The Engage phase will create the students interest and the following Study and Activate phases help the students feel more and more accomplished as they come to their final task of a playing a game. For the productive skills the game can be to encourage students to speak and read about something they wrote on the given topic and have other students guess an answer. For the receptive skills the students can form two teams and play a game of Tic Tac Toe or a game of Jeopardy answering questions on grammar for example.
