The unit focused on ways in which the use of coursebooks and lesson materials can be relevant and helpful in the classroom. It highlighted that while textbooks are usually expected to be had by students, not all material is suitable and this will sometimes need to supplemented by the teacher creating materials. The materials used in the classroom or learning experience can be authentic or created. Authentic material focuses on anything a native speaker would read or hear, while created materials are graded to the students’ learning level and often employs the creativity of the teacher.
Overall, it is important for the teacher to strike a good balance between the use of authentic and creative materials in the classroom, with the understanding that while textbooks are tried and true representations of the language, the topics presented can be a bit uninteresting to the students and a tad predictable.
