While linguists may (convincingly) argue that only languages only have two tenses, for the purpose of EFL instruction 12 tenses are covered, 4 of which are important to this unit: present simple, present continuous, present perfect, and present perfect continuous. Knowledge of how and why these tenses are used is essential to both teachers and students. Most of Unit 4 serves as a reference for native speakers who, while intuitively knowing the grammar, may not be familiar with the academic aspects, especially concerning what usages are associated with each tense. I plan on using it particularly to remind me of the differences between the perfect tenses as they tend to appear less frequently in my EFL lessons.
