One of the most important things I have learnt is the importance of building a rapport and keeping students engaged. Using visual teaching materials, creating a positive learning environment, being organized and prepared for the lesson and giving positive feedback to students to boost their confidence, are among the many strategies this course has taught me.
By using fun games in my first class to find out my students aspirations and level of English will build a rapport between me and other students. Using pair work and role plays to arouse and help students to be comfortable in their surroundings will help with reluctant students and keep them interested in using new vocabulary and grammar. It is key to to encourage them to use their new skills as much as possible and for them to feel safe to make mistakes as this is how we learn.
When faced with different level students I have learnt it is important to be prepared, I would use the same material but have different tasks and extra materials ready for stronger students as to keep the whole class working on the same material.
I will continue to refer to the notes I have made as I begin to teach English as these are the fundamentals I need to ensure I am successful and meet the needs of my class.
