Unit six deals with the past tenses of English verbs: the past simple, past continuous, past perfect, and past perfect continuous. This is another element of grammar rarely taught explicitly to native English speakers; I myself only became aware of the nuances of the past tense when I began to study foreign languages. For this reason it is important that a teacher be able to explain the uses of each tense clearly and concisely, as well as provide many example sentences to demonstrate in what context each past tense is appropriate. The instructor should also have a plan to effectively teach the irregularities in many past tense verb formations.
