This unit addressed the various methods to approaching an EFL lesson, including the tradition (i.e., grammar-translation), the popular (i.e., PPP), and the unusual (i.e., suggestopaedia). The technique advocated for beginner teachers is called Engage, Study, Activate, or ESA for short. First, students are engaged through various fun activities to "warm-up" to English. Then, students study the focus on the chosen language aspect. Finally, students practice (or activate) what they have learned. ESA can be rearranged to fit the lesson, either by reflecting back (or "boomeranging") or in a "patchwork" arrangement. Later in the unit, example activities for the Engage, Study, and Activate stages were presented. Of particular interest to myself, as a working EFL instructor, was the emphasis on proper correction and the differences between mistakes and errors. Practical EFL work in South Korea tends to overemphasize and over-inflate the importance of correction, which can cause students to grow cautious and uncomfortable.
