Brazeau, Wisconsin TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
In this unit I learned in-depth about English grammar and its complexities and nuances. This unit covered the various parts of speech and gave helpful examples on the rules each part follows. As a native English speaker I do not think much about why certain words or parts of speech make sense, so this lesson helped me understand the reasoning behind English grammar such as what qualifies as an adverb, or how gerunds allow verbs to act as the subject of a sentence rather than a noun. This lesson also highlighted that although English grammar does have a set of rules, there are quite a lot of words that are the exception to these rules, which could prove to be challenging to teach to non-native speakers. There were a lot of examples that defied grammar rules particularly in the Articles section, which made me realize just how confusing the English language might appear to non-native speakers. What I've taken away from this lesson is that there are a lot of grammatical subtleties that make up the English language, but there are some cases (such as with the words that break the grammatical rules) where I must trust my own instinct to see what sounds right as a native speaker.
