Bass Lake, Wisconsin TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
From this unit I have learnt that classroom management is a vital aspect of teaching. For learning to be effective classroom layout, (the way desks/tables are arranged and where the position of the teachers desk) is important. Teacher talk time and the way I use my voice, gestures, and resources are also relevant as is, whether I am standing or sitting. These moments where I stand either at the front of the class or in another part of the classroom is beneficial when giving instructions or working with the whole class, however standing can be a distraction if I ask the students to work independently as individuals, pairs or groups. At times if I am reading with a group it is better for me to be sitting, as I don't need to dominate the students or the space. Using simple language, making sure I do not give instructions while my back is turned and using visual cues or all important aspects of teaching students. At the beginning of the year I think long and hard about the number of students I have in my class and how to arrange the desks. I like my desk to be at the front of the room, close to the board and all the resources I need such as white board markers and erasers. I also like it to be facing the students so I can monitor them sitting while they are working independently, but not disturb them. Where they sit is dependent on a number of factors, such as problems with eyesight, hearing, focusing, and whether they can work constructively with friends or not.
